Learn the traditional Japanese method of mending ceramics with urushi lacquer and gold powder—where breakage becomes beauty

Kintsugi Workshop

Learn the Traditional Japanese Art of Golden Joinery

ZIYO’s Kintsugi Workshop in London offers a rare opportunity to experience the traditional Japanese art of ceramic repair using natural urushi lacquer and genuine metal powders such as gold, silver, or brass. Far beyond a decorative craft, kintsugi is a meditative process rooted in wabi-sabi aesthetics — honouring imperfection, transience, and presence.

Each session is designed to introduce you to the philosophy, tools, and techniques behind this time-honoured repair method. Rather than hiding damage, kintsugi embraces it — highlighting the breakage as part of the object’s journey. At ZIYO, we guide each participant slowly and thoughtfully through this process, allowing space for quiet focus and personal reflection.

Through this Kintsugi Workshop London, you will learn:

  • Prepare and handle authentic Kintsugi materials like urushi lacquer, natural pigments, and polishing powders

  • Follow the full step-by-step process of repairing broken ceramics using traditional techniques

  • Explore the deeper rhythm and mindset of wabi-sabi and mushin (無心 “no-mind”), the heart of slow repair

  • Reflect on imperfection as beauty, and breakage as a form of continuity

This workshop is ideal for those seeking a gentle yet profound encounter with repair—not just of objects, but perhaps something deeper within. Whether you come with broken ceramics or simply a curious mind, this experience welcomes all who appreciate craftsmanship and meaningful making.
