Kintsugi ceramic and pottery repair service

ZIYO offers kintsugi repair service (金継ぎ) for your broken object. Kintsugi repair uses the natural lacquer and highlights the vine of the cracks filled with various precious metal dusts or leave such as gold or silver. This repair method has an amazing finish and will not attempt to disguise the breakage, but will instead highlight the cracks. We feel that kintsugi repair gives a new life and meaning to a much loved piece of pottery that was accidentally broken. This repair technique adds to the history of an object, giving it new life and meaning for generations to come.

As a philosophy, imperfect can be seen to have similarities to the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, a philosophy that embraces the flawed or imperfect. Japanese aesthetics values wear and tear through the use of an object. This can be seen as a rationale for keeping an object around even after it has broken and as a justification of kintsugi itself; highlighting the cracks and repairs as simply an event in the life of an object rather than allowing its service to end at the time of its damage or breakage.

For Kintsugi repair, the process uses a natural lacquer, which is very tough and hard once it is dried, so the durability is unquestionable. This repair method require precision and many stages to achieve quality finish, usually these repairs can take several weeks to complete. We can photograph and catalogue the progress of the repair for you, giving you a further historical record of the item being repaired. There are a few major styles or types of kintsugi:

Crack (ひび), the use of gold dust and resin or lacquer to attach broken pieces with minimal overlap or fill-in from missing pieces
Piece method (欠けの金継ぎ例), where a replacement ceramic fragment is not available and the entirety of the addition is gold or gold/lacquer compound
Joint call (呼び継ぎ), where a similarly shaped but non-matching fragment is used to replace a missing piece from the original vessel creating a patchwork effect^[15]
