Developing Your Own Approach to Tea

A Personal Journey Through Tea Practice

At ZIYO, our tea culture lessons offer a personal approach to the art and practice of tea , encouraging you to develop your own understanding through observation, experimentation, and practice.

There is no single approach to tea. Instead, we explore different brewing methods and encourage you to discover what works for you. As your experience grows, your tea practice can develop its own character.

Whether you are new to tea or have years of experience, each lesson begins with you. From there, we explore new possibilities through practical experience and observation. Through thoughtful guidance and hands-on exploration, you will learn to make more considered choices and gradually develop a tea practice that feels genuinely your own.

Beyond Brewing Techniques

The experience of tea goes beyond brewing techniques. The choice of teaware, the arrangement of a tea space, the way water is heated, and the decisions made during brewing all contribute to how a tea is experienced and expressed.

At ZIYO, we encourage you to explore these relationships without fixed rules or expectations. The aim is not to reproduce a particular style, but to develop the confidence and sensitivity to discover what works for you.

What You’ll Explore

  • Your Personal Tea Perspective — Reflecting on your experiences and preferences to develop a clearer understanding of what you value in tea.
  • Brewing & Expression — Exploring how different approaches to brewing influence the character, structure, and expression of tea.
  • Teaware & Practical Choices — Understanding how materials, forms, and functions affect tea preparation, and selecting tools that support your intentions.
  • Tea Space & Arrangement — Considering the relationship between tea, objects, space, and seasonal elements to create a setting that feels connected to the tea being served.
  • Observation & Experimentation — Learning through tasting, comparison, and practical exploration, allowing your judgement to develop through experience.

Seasonal flowers and Chabana may be introduced as part of tea space arrangement. More in-depth study is available through our dedicated Chabana lessons.
