Join ZIYO to experience traditional oriental activities and workshops

What we do

ZIYO is an organisation and event space that provides traditional oriental activities and workshops, which includes traditional Chinese tea culture, Guqin music lessons, and flower arranging.

We offer the following workshops:

We conduct traditional Chinese/Taiwanese tea ceremonies for small groups. Participants are introduced to some of the traditions and rituals, equipment, and the preparation of Chinese tea. Participants will learn how to set up a formal tea ceremony and how to correctly brew Oolong tea. We will introduce participants to three types of Oolong tea, each require their own type of teapot which allows for the best brewing results to be achieved.

The Oolong teas we provide are from ZIYO’s founder’s family tea plantation which is located on the Shan Lin Xi 杉林溪, mountain located in the middle of Taiwan, some 1,700 meters above sea level. This region is a protected area, so the amount of land allowed for tea cultivation is extremely limited, thus the teas from this region are scarce and highly valued by traditional tea drinkers. The tea from this area is renowned for its purity and excellent quality.

You can purchase these teas from the ZIYO web store.

Tea is our passion and so is guqin music. The Guqin is strongly associated with Tea culture and provides a meditative soundtrack to tea ceremonies. We offer one-to-one lessons for this ancient Chinese zither instrument.

In 2003 Guqin music was proclaimed to be one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, which gives it official recognition of its importance and its contribution to Chinese culture.

You can book a free lesson with ZIYO to experience one of the oldest musical instruments still played today and where we hope you will experience its musical meditative powers.

Flower arrangements are an integral part of traditional Chinese tea culture. Our flower arranging workshop will teach you about flower arrangements and decorations for tea ceremonies. The workshop will show you how to do two flower arrangements, and at the end of the workshop we will use these arrangements to embellish the tea ceremony that will conducted at the end of the workshop.

SERVICE:

Now ZIYO provides a Ceramic and pottery repair serviceZIYO offers TWO solutions for your broken object. The first technique is called Kintsugi (金継ぎ) which uses the natural lacquer and highlights the vine of the cracks filled with various precious metal dusts such as gold, silver or platinum. The second one is a Chinese traditional repair technique called Juci (鋦磁) which is solely using a metal strip to staple up the broken pieces. Both methods have an amazing finish and will not attempt to disguise the breakage, but will instead highlight the cracks . We feel these methods of repairing give a new life and meaning to a much loved piece of pottery that was accidentally broken. This repair technique adds to the history of an object, giving it new life and meaning for generations to come.

ZIYO was founded and is run by Lin Yi, a Taiwanese contemporary artist, based in Crystal Palace in South-East London.
